Junior Varsity Booters Shut Out Providence College Varsity, 1-0

The Harvard junior varsity soccer team faced the Providence College varsity yesterday and managed to outlast them for a 1-0 victory.

Harvard was in possession of the ball for most of the game. Their opponent's strategy of concentrating most of their strength in the defense, however, was enough to block most of the Crimson's scoring attempts. Providence pulled back as many as five players in front of the goal for much of the game.

Center forward Gino Marchese, who tallied two of the three goals against Brown last Wednesday, provided the only score of the afternoon.

The first play of the game established the pattern for the rest of the match. Harvard grabbed the ball at midfield and drove towards the goal but the Providence defense pushed the attack into the corner. Even when the Crimson managed to get the ball into the middle, Providence's outstanding goalie repeatedly grabbed it before a score could be made.

The Harvard defense had little trouble. Fullback Andy Abbott played an excellent game, deflecting the Providence offensive attacks. Also displaying a lot of hustle was halfback Steve Klein, who took the ball away from Providence and fed the Harvard front line.

The only break in the pattern was the Crimson score late in the second quarter. Frank Jurado, on the right side, booted a long ball in front of the net. In the scramble, the Providence goalie came out of the strings, and center forward Marchese stuffed the ball into the empty goal for the score.

At game's end, a running batle between the Providence coach and the referee nearly turned into a fight. "You're the worst ref I've ever seen in my life," yelled the coach. "With a team like you got, buddy," the ref yelled back, "nothin' would do you any good."

The junior varsity team record now stands at 5-1, with the squad's only loss in their first game against Southeastern Mass. Tech.

Next week the team travels to New Jersey to face Princeton, which traditionally fields a strong squad. The Crimson finishes up its season with a return match against Brown and a game with Yale.
