In the past Boston University has been an easy victim for Harvard's varsity soccer team. But today's game with the Terriers should be different.
BU has won its first two games, and its 2-0 victory over Brandeis convinced scouts that they will be tough.
True to form Harvard is hampered by injuries to several key players. Forward Jaime Vargas who pulled a groin muscle and right halfback John Gordon are still listed as doubtful starters today.
But Solomon Gomez seems fully recovered from an injured Achilles tendon, as evidenced by his great playmaking against MIT. High scoring Pete Bogovich's bruised ankle shouldn't trouble his performance.
On the plus side, the easy victory against MIT gave Harvard Coach Bruce Munro a chance to evaluate his talent in the search for the needed defensive depth that has been lacking since the start of the season.
Deadly Offense
Standout individual performances by Leslie Cutler who filled in for Gordon, and Rollin McClain who alternated at fullback should solve some of the Crimson's defensive problems in the future.
The BU game may give Munro the opportunity to see his "dream" line playing together for the first time this year if Vargas can play. Wings Gerry Montero and Captain Scott Robertson flank Gomez, Bogovich, and Vargas.
The return of the speedy Gomez has been an "invaluable" assist to the defense. Gomez's range takes much of the pressure off of the halfbacks in mid-field play.
