Led by strong performances from Bob Seals and Alan Long, the freshman cross country team sped to the Greater Boston Championship yesterday at Franklin Park. The Yardlings scored 27 points to beat six local rivals decisively.
Seals went to the front at the opening gun and was threatened only once over the 3.1-mile course. Tufts standout Bob Ryan moved up to run with Seals briefly during the middle mile, but Seals upped the pace to win going away.
Harvard's Alan Long worked his way from an early fifth position to challenge Ryan in the home stretch, finally sprinting a way in the last 200 yards for second place, sixteen seconds behind Seals. Long has shown an increasing ability to stick to a fast early pace and should be ready to challenge the leaders in the Big Three meet this Friday.
Dick Jurgens, still in bad condition after a recent foot injury, finished strongly to grab sixth place in 16:40. Newly elected freshman captain Andy Meltzoff used his blistering kick to overtake two B.C. runners for seventh. Rick Barton was only seven seconds behind, but began his sprint too late and had to settle for eleventh. Phil Liechtenstein and Jake Seniuk rounded out the Harvard scoring with thirteenth and fourteenth places.
Jocular freshman coach Bob Hunt expressed post-meet satisfaction with his team's ability to win in a large field.
