Gridders and Booters Will Oppose Average Dartmouth Teams Today

Coach Dana Getchell's undefeated freshman soccer team travels to Hanover today to face Dartmouth in their first Ivy League contest.

The Dartmouth team has compiled an undistinguished 2-2 record, losing to Williams and Brown, but Getchell anticipates a "sky high" opponent out to spoil the freshmen's four-game winning streak this season.

Little Trouble Moving

Harvard beat back a challenge by a tough Exeter team Wednesday in a tough 3-1 win. Exeter pulled back seven men on defense each time Harvard attacked. The Yardlings had little trouble moving the ball up the field, but they could not penetrate the pack of Exeter defenders stationed in front of the goal.

"I'm glad Exeter did that," Getchell said, "because it gave us a taste of what Dartmouth is going to do. Our halfbacks and insidemen are going to have to move the ball up quicker by using through passes."

Exceptional Defense

Wing Russ Bell, coming back from a groin injury, scored two goals, and inside Skip Marotta tallied one goal, but Getchell singled out the exceptional defensive work of halfbacks Chris Ferner and Chris Wilmot as decisive. Fullbacks Red Jahncke and Barnes Abbott, whom he calls "the best pair together I have ever had," also spearheaded a defense that allowed only one goal.
