The Harvard Sailing team placed seventh in last weekend's intercollegiate sailing races at Annapolis, Maryland after the Harvard boat momentarily tipped over in the third race on Saturday.
On the same weekend two other Crimson crews were placing second and third in regattas at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, and the Finn Nonagonal on the Charles.
The 'knockdown' in the Macmillan Cup regatta at Annapolis occured when the Crimson sailors were unable to get the spinaker sail down after rounding a leeward mark. The eight-man Harvard crew managed to right the 40-ft. yawl in winds gusting to 20 knots and finished the race in ninth place, after being third around the mark.
Harvard finished the regatta in seventh place and Yale sailed away with the Cup. The Macmillan Cup marked the fifth weekend of competitive sailing for Harvard this fall.
Other Regatta
Also last weekend, two Crimson two-man crews competed in the Donaghy Bowl on Lake Quinsigamond. Harvard finished second, behind M.I.T. Sailing captain Parker Jayne '69 said "considering the thin spread of the sailing team last weekend, Harvard did well to finish second."
In the third event of the weekend, the Finn Nonagonal (nine teams), the Harvard one-man crews placed third. Abbott Reeve '71 turned in an outstanding performance, amassing the best point score of any skipper in the event.
This weekend Harvard faces two strong teams, M.I.T. and Yale, in the Hoyt Trophy races at Brown.
Charles Regatta
Harvard will have entries in singles, fours, and eights in the fourth annual Head of the Charles Regatta this Sunday. There will be continuous rowing on the river from noon until 4 p.m.
The lifting of an Ivy League ban on Fall competition has encouraged enough entries to make this the largest regatta ever held in the United States. Seven Ivy League colleges will send crews.
