J.V. Six Roll, Yardmen Fall

Harvard's undefeated J.V. hockey team blasted a defenseless University of New Hampshire freshman squad off the Watson ice Saturday, 11-0. Powered by an eight goal second period explosion, the Crimson raised its record to 5-0-1.

Setting a fast, early pace, Captain Tom Mechem scored in the first minute of play, and New Hampshire never threatened after that. Harvard's revolving lines consistently outskated the undermanned Baby Wildcats.

Unhampered by the absence of leading scorer George McManama, who moved to the varsity, the Crimson showed remarkable depth. Coach Jim Htuchinson's experiment with a new third line paid off with five tallies.

Three Crimson skaters--Mechem, Russ MacAusland, and John Bemis each registered two goals and two assists. Harvard outshot New Hampshire 53-19, with goalies Paul Oldfield and Mike LoPresti combining to preserve the shutout.

Freshman Hockey

Spoiling a weekend sweep for Harvard hockey, the Yardlings dropped a 2-1 contest to the Boston College J.V. It was their first defeat in seven outings.

The long Christmas lay-off was costly for Harvard as they were repeatedly outplayed by the aggressive Eagles. Sloppy stick-handling and bad timing marred the Crimson effort as B.C. intercepted numerous passes. Two thefts were converted into scores past goalie Captain Bruce Durno.

B.C. was frequently shorthanded because of penalties, but the lifeless Harvard six was unable to capitalize. John Burnett, B.C.'s netminder, was almost impenetrable as he turned away 40 shots. The lone Crimson tally came at 5:35 of the first period. Joe Cavanagh, the Yardling's top scorer, drilled a pass from fellow forward Steve Owen into the upper left-hand corner of the Eagle nets past the out-positioned Burnett.

Both the freshmen and J.V. travel south to Rhode Island Wednesday to warm-up against the weak Bruins for much tougher games later in the week against New Preparatory School and Boston College.
