Harvard seeks its first Ivy League lacrosse victory in two years, as Coach Bruce Munro's stickmen host undefeated Penn tomorrow at Cumnock Field, behind the Business School. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
The Quakers have struggled to their unblemished mark. They went into overtime against Lehigh, just nipped Yale, 5-4, and played a fairly even game with M.I.T. for three quarters before pulling out to win, 10-6.
"Actually, I think we're pretty evenly matched," Munro said yesterday, "We've shown a marked improvement since the Southern trip, and looked good against M.I.T. on Wednesday."
Injuries
But the Crimson will have to shake off injuries to key players if it is to challenge penn, a 13-3 victor over Harvard last year. Sophomores Tom Nicosia and Mike Ananis have been hurt yesterday in practice and whether they will play tomorrow is uncertain.
Penn is the only Crimson opponent to use a zone defense, and Munro has had his offense working on plays to use against the zone.
"It's kind of a waste, because we won't use the plays against anybody else," Munro said.
Its midfielders have been Penn's strong point this year, particularly Gil Costin and Charley Dewey. Jim Patton and Irwin Klein have supplied offensive power.
Consistent Coale
The most consistent Quaker performer has probably been goalie Howdy Coale, according to Penn coach Avery Blake. Coale turned in a sparkling game in the nets Wednesday as Penn defeated Swarthmore.
If Ananis is ready and the Harvard midfielders play as well as they did in the M.I.T. win on Wednesday, the Crimson could win their first League contest since edging Brown, 8-7, two years ago. "It should be a good game," Munro said, meaning a possible win.
