Eliot House captured the House hockey championships last night for the third straight year by downing an aggressive Dunster House team 3-2. Dick Stiles scored the winning goal in the second period on a deflection in front of the goal.
Dunster's Jim Beuchi scored first shortly after the opening whistle. Jeff Schmidt and Bill Schaefer put the Elephants out in front near the end of the period. Just before the end of the game Schuyler Hollingsworth of Dunster completed the scoring, making it 3-2.
The victory gave Eliot the right to travel to New Haven next Saturday to play Yale's intramural hockey champs. In the Yale game last year, played at Watson, Eliot beat Yale's Saybrook College 5-0.
Co-captains Dudley Blodgett and Pete Echeverria will lead the sextet against Yale. Starting along with forward Blodgett and goalie Echeverria will be forwards Tom Dingman and Dave Taylor and defensemen Schmidt and Bob Higgins.
Schmidt is the key to the team. A fast, hard-shooting point man, he leads Eliot in scoring. His rink-length rushes initiate many of the scoring chances, and his strong blue-line play keeps much of the action away from the goalie.
Eliot House finished the season with an 11-1 record. Dunster, led by forwards Bruce Lopuchi, Rick Doyle, and Jim Beuchi, ended in second place at 9-3. Behind them in the standings came Lowell House (8-2-1), Leverett House (6-4-2), Winthrop House (5-5-1), and Kirkland House (2-8-1). Quincy, Dudley, and Adams Houses finished out of the playoffs.
