Cornell's ECAC hockey champions advanced to the finals of the NCAA tournament at Syracuse last night with a 1-0 victory over North Dakota. The Big Red will play the winner of tonight's Michigan State-Boston University game.
Defenseman Walt Stankowski scored the only goal of the game at 17:27 of the first period. He took a pass from Bob McGuinn just after leaving the penalty box, skated between the North Dakota defensemen, and fired the puck past goalie Mike Curran.
Cornell goalie Ken Dryden preserved the slim lead with a 30 save performance. It was his fourth shutout of the season.
The win raises Cornell's record to 26-1-1. They won the Ivy title with a 9-1-0 record, losing only to Brown. North Dakota, Western Collegiate Hockey Association champ, is now 19-9.
