Lowell Swordsmen Win Championship

Sophomore Peter Rosenfield-Munch. Who learned to swordfight in his native Argentina, led Lowell House's two-man fencing team to the house championship in the three day competition that concluded last night in the IAB.

Lowell edged by Dunster, 14-13, on 13 points by Munch and one, on a sixth-place finish in last night's epee, by junior Steve Arnon. Leverett was third with 12 points, all scored by junior Ken Russell, an individual winner in both the sabre and the epee.

The diminutive Munch made his best showing on Monday night, when he defeated football end Carter Lord in the foil competition. He then scored three points for a fourth in Tuesday's sabre event and closed with four points for his third place finish in last night's epee.

Last year's winner in the sabre and runner-up in the foil, Leverett's Russell, who fenced with a pair of ripped pants, passed up the foil this year to concentrate on the less disciplined sabre and epee events. He had some close calls last night, edging Munch and Winthrop's Phil Chase by identical 5-4 scores.

Lowell received 40 points toward the Straus Trophy for its fencing heroics, while Dunster earned 35 for second place. Defending champ Eliot could only manage a sixth-place finish in the sabre by Bill Crowe, and was shut out of Straus points.

Dudley's only entrant, sophomore Keith Krieger, upset Russell in their epee match last night and pulled out a fifth in that event to give his house 15 points toward the intramural championship.

Russell's great individual effort won 30 Straus points for Leverett, which continues to threaten Eliot for house supremacy.
