Bragg Versatility Paces Tank Wins

The Harvard swim team wrung out Ivy League bathmats Penn and Columbia in away meets Friday and Saturday.

Behind the stunningly versatile performance of sophomore John Bragg, the Crimson drowned the Quakers, 69-26, and the Lions, 55-40.

Bragg, after winning the 500-yard free-style against Penn Friday afternoon, scored a crucial double the next day in he 200-yard free and the 200-yard backstroke.

No one expected much of a struggle from the perennially punchless Quakers--and aside from am opening Penn victory in the medley relay, the expectations proved correct.

Bill Shrout and Dick Smith swept to an easy one-two finish in the 200-free; Rad Smith and Andy Grinstead swept the 50-yd. free; Bill Murphy and Pete Alter swooped to a convincing dive win.

This went on and on for the whole afternoon. Marty Chalfie set a Penn pool record in the 200 butterfly, with Doug Walther second. Bob Padway and Dick Sacks took the 100-free, Bragg and Bob Hughes copped the 500-free and Buzz Cummins subbed for mononucleosis-ridden Bob Corris to win the 200 breaststroke.

Columbia put up a stiffer struggle, but the Harvard aces came through in the clutch. Murphy, Chalfie, Shrout, and the redoubtable Bragg all won again to pace the Crimson to its fourth victory in six meets.
