Schoonover Breaks Vault Record As Track Team Routs Dartmouth

Steve Schoonover's record 15'-6 1/2" pole vault highlighted the Harvard track team's 93-16 rout of Dartmouth at Hanover, N.H., yesterday. Jim Baker's field house record in the two-mile run and Ron Wilson's winning weight throw of 57'-6" also stood out as the Crimson thinclads won 11 of 13 events.

Schoonover's vault, the highest ever by a New England collegian, broke his old Harvard record as he topped the Indians' 15-footer, Dave Wagenseil. The sophomore had cleared similar heights in practice, but 14'8" was his best jump in competition until yesterday.

Coach Bill McCurdy dropped Doug Hardin down to the mile, and the sophomore long-distance runner responded with a 4:11.9 time and a victory. Tim McCloone and Jim Smith trailed by a second. Baker's time in the two-mile was 9:11.1.

Wilson led teammates Charlie Ajootian and Gene Mazel to a sweep in the weights, while Dick Benka captured the shotput with a 52'-2 1/4" toss.

Dave McKelvey won the 600 with a time of 1:11.5, and junior Bob Stempson ran his best race of the year as he took the 1000 in 2:12.7.

Captain Wayne Anderson won the 50-yard dash, with Bill Jewett second. Tim Hatfield won the long jump with a leap of 21'-6".

The mile relay team of McKelvey, Frank Snowden, Frank Haggerty, and Joe Sam Robinson handily topped the Green in 3:22.4. Harvard won the two-mile relay with a makeshift quartet, as Dartmouth didn't enter a team.

Dartmouth's track is one of the East's fastest and presents a good chance for record-breaking. The only Crimson runner to take full advantage of it was freshman Keith. Colburn, who tied Jeff Huvelle's Harvard record in the 600 with a sparkling 1:10.5 time.

The freshmen won their meet, 62-46.
