Yale, Brown Invade IAB To Confront Crimson Five

The Harvard basketball team, hoping to find the road out of the Ivy cellar, tangles with third place Yale and co-cellar dweller Brown at the IAB this weekend.

It will not be an-easy weekend. Yale is still smarting from a one point loss to fourth-ranked Princeton last Friday and Brown has shown tremendous improvement since exam break. In fact, the Bruns came within three of upsetting that same Princeton team.

Rick Stoner is probably the Yalie's most exciting player. Against Princeton, he shot 60 per cent from the floor, hitting on 15 foot jumpers from both sides of the key.

Goldstone Shines

But the next night against Penn, the well-balanced Bulldogs featured husky forward Ed Goldstone in the starring role. Goldstone poured in 22 points to pace a last minute 71-64 win.

Stoner's backcourt partner Bob Mc-Callum has on occasion recorded big scoring nights and the two of them form one of the Ivy's top guard duos.

There's another boy the Crimson will have to watch. In the last seconds of the Princeton loss, senior Howie Dale popped up a short jump shot; it missed the mark and Yale lost, but Dale was far from a goat. His 13 points and tough rebounding had kept the Bulldogs in the game.

Brown has never been even a pretender to being an Ivy League contender. But in the last few weeks, the Bruins have stuck with the best in the league, mainly on some sharp outside shooting.

Reynolds Bombs

Billy Reynolds, one of Rhode Island's best, bombed from downtown against Princeton, scored a game-high 18 points and made a crucial steal in-the last minute which almost salvaged the upset.

Up front, senior Dave Gale hit from inside and outside in a heart-breaking 78-77 loss to Penn last Friday. Gale totted up 25 points in this narrow loss to a team which smashed the Crimson by 20 just two weeks ago.

Scrappy 5 ft. 8 in. A1 Fishman has been battling the game's giants for three years. Whenever coaches talk about the Bruins, they reserve special praise for Fishman's quick, accurate jumper and hustling defense.

As for Harvard -- well... Coach Floyd Wilson has shifted lineups week after week in an effort to find a winning combination. One would hope he finds the winner this weekend.
