University Will Help Meet PBHA's Deficit Next Year

Phillips Brooks House Association's search for more financial support has succeeded as Dean Ford has indicated the University will contribute heavily to PBHA's annual budget.

Ford stated that he was "favorably disposed" to providing aid for PBHA's "specifically educational functions." He has asked Dean Monro and Charles P. Price, Preacher to the University and chairman of the Faculty Committee on PBH, to draw up specific financial recommendations on areas which the University may aid.

Monro said yesterday that he, Price, and the PBHA undergraduate officers will work out the details "very soon."

After Monro and Price prepare the financial details, Ford will make a recommendation to President Pusey as part of budget for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Final approval must come from the Corporation.

Deficit

Peter B. Rosenbaum '67, PBHA president, and Chester E. Finn '65, PBHA graduate secretary, had originally asked the University for $21,000 to cover an anticipated deficit next year.

The request included $18,500 to fill the gap between the Association's fixed expenses and its predictable income,e, plus $2,500 for a second half-time secretary. PBHA's fixed expenses for basic operation and for part-time professional consultants amount to $42,210 annually, while-its assured income is only $23,700.

Nothing Specific

Ford said that the amount of the PBHA request did not seem unreasonable to him. He added, however, that he had not decided on a specific amount to recommend.

Asked whether the aid will be a permanent or temporary commitment, Ford said that "if I ever make a financial commitment that ends after one year, I'll think I achieved a miracle."

Judgment Call

Ford said he did not feel that the University would be setting a precedent by assisting PBHA. "It is a judgment call," he said. He referred to the Loeb Drama Center, the Carpenter Center, and the athletic department as other areas partly financed from the Arts and Sciences budget.

"I do not think we could justify aid to PBH if the funds were under purely student control," Ford said.
