Three Yardling Squads Record Opening Victories

Hockey

The Harvard freshman hockey team and coach Gene Kinasewich made a successful debut Saturday evening at the Arena, trouncing Northeastern, 7-3.

Steve Owen and Dan Demichele contributed two goals apiece and with line-mate Joe Cavanaugh skated circles around the Husky pups. John Alessandroni and Dave Opsahl scored the other Harvard goals.

Goalie Bruce Durno shut out Northeastern in the first period as Harvard built a 4-0 lead. The two teams traded goals thereafter.

Kinasewich, an assistant dean of the College, captained the Crimson varsity to a 17-7 season in 1964.

The Harvard J.V. downed the Boston University freshmen 8-6 at Watson Rink Saturday afternoon. Sophomores Andre Lemieux and George McManama and junior Pete Haley tallied twice for the Crimson, with Dick Delaney and Red Mechem rounding out the long scoring list. Harvard had built a 7-3 lead and held off the Terriers' third-period comeback bid.

The J.V. plays host to the Dartmouth freshman at 4 p.m. today in Watson Rink.

Basketball

Led by the deadly outside shooting of 6-6 Mike Janczewski, and the timely ball hawking of Dale Dover, the Harvard freshman basketball team began its season by trouncing Boston University, 88-78 Saturday night at the IAB.

Grabbing the lead from the outset, the Crimson five effectively throttled the high scoring combination of B.U.'s John Hassan and Dave Banovich and opened an 11 point lead at the half. Clutch steals by the agile Dover, who also contributed 18 points, and complete mastery of the boards by 6-8 George Yates ensured the victory.

Janczewski's 24 points led all scorers, and the other Crimson starters, Dave Finholt and Joe Stanislaw, tallied 10 and 14 respectively.

The freshman now take to the road for games against Wesleyan, Boston College, and New Hampshire and return to the IAB to host Northeastern on Dec. 18.

Swimming

Harvard's freshman swimming team got off to a fast start Saturday by trouncing Springfield, 75-20, in the Crimson's season opener.

The team took all first places in the meet, broke one record, and came close to several others. Steve Krause, an All-American in high school, won the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley. In the freestyle event, Krause broke a three year old freshman record with a time of 5:00.7.

In the 200-yard butterfly, John Monk, another high school All-American, missed the Harvard record by only half a second. His time of 2:01.1 far outdistanced the Springfield opposition.

Strong showings were also made by freestyler Dave Powlison in the 200-yard event and by diver Dick Eisenberg off the one and three meter boards.

The margin of victory Saturday was encouraging even though Springfield is a weak team. The times, many of them close to records, were far better than freshman times in past years. Next week the Yardlings will face a reputedly touch team at Williston Academy. The first Ivy League meet is with Brown on January 10 in Providence.
