Raquetmen Split With Canadians

Harvard's squash team thrashed Canada's McGill University, 8-2, Saturday to highlight a victorious three-match weekend in Montreal.

Harvard, weakened by the absence of Bombay-bound Anil Nayar and Rick Sterne, lost two of the top three matches. But the Crimson's depth proved too great for the Canadians.

Sophomore Larry Terrell, filling in for Nayar at number one, was edged out, 3-2, in a heart-stopper by McGill's Peter Martin. Terrell had the Canadian inter-collegiate champ down 14-8 in the last game before Martin staged a brilliant rally to win.

John Whitbeck, playing number three, was the only other Crimson player to lose. Jose Gonzalez whipped Martin's brother, Carry, in the number two match.

In the other two weekend matches, the racquetmen whipped the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, 9-1, then bowed 7-3 to the Montreal Badminton and Squash Club on Sunday. The MBSC team won the U.S. Team Championships last year and is currently the best team in North America.

In the highlight of the Sunday match, Gonzalez upset the highly-ranked Martin (who had nipped Terrell on Saturday), 3-1, with a beautiful shotmaking display.
