The City will not count the ballots on the Cambridge Neighborhood Committee on Vietnam's anti-war initiative petition until November 28, three weeks after election day.
Governor John A. Volpe signed a special legislative act Wednesday, authorizing the City to delay the count. The Cambridge City Council requested the act so that late absentee ballots can be included in the count. Under the act, any absentee ballots received by Nov. 27 will be counted.
After the polls close Tuesday, the total number of ballots cast on the antiwar petition will be counted--face down so as not to reveal the results. The ballots will then be sealed and sent to a bank vault. Representatives of CNCV and veterans' groups opposing the petition will accompany the ballots to and from the bank to assure that no tampering occurs.
