Quincy House squeaked by an underdog Winthrop team in overtime, 4-3, yesterday to clinch the House soccer title for 1967.
The decision on the championship went down to the last game, with Eliot and Lowell in hot pursuit of the undefeated Orangemen. Quincy finished with a 6-0-2 record and 14 points. Eliot and Lowell tied for second with 12 points each. Eliot ended the season with a 6-2-0 record, while Lowell was 5-1-2.
Eight-place Winthrop tried valiantly to play the role of spoiler in yesterday's game. On a cold and rainy day they almost bettered the first-place team.
Quincy jumped to a 2-1 lead and maintained it until halftime. Left wing Van Edwards scored both Quincy goals in the first half.
Winthrop closed the gap early in the third quarter and in the fourth they took the lead. Quincy avoided disaster only by the last minue tally of Van Edwards.
The overtime looked like an even match until Edwards once again pulled the Orange out of the fire, scoring on a long shot from outside to win the game and the titlte for Quincy.
Eliot, Lowell Next
On Wednesday Eliot secured a tie with Lowell for second place by defeating fifth place Kirkland, 2-0.
Kirkland played the first half with the wind at its back, but a strong Eliot defense held, and the halftime score was 0-0.
Just after the start of the second half Gene Warner and Don Blocth scored to put Eliot out in front to stay. The two goals came within a minute of each other, and gave the defense the lead it needed to save the game.
Quincy will now play the winner of Yale's intramural soccer contest during New Haven Weekend. At the moment Siliman, last year's champion is in the lead with a 7-1 record. With three games remaining in the Yale season, however, Dwight and Pierson Colleges still have shots at the title.
