New Coaching Spurs Harvard, Radcliffe Skiing

The Harvard and Radcliffe ski teams are always thinking "snow-white," but this fall the color is green.

Two Dartmouth graduates, both top collegiate skiers, are coaching the teams. Dick Friedman, Harvard freshman coach for the past four years, took over the Varsity when coach Charlie Gibson left last spring. Cliffies have lined up Chuck Lobitz to work with them. He comes to Radcliffe after two years of coaching at the Holderness School in northern New Hampshire.

Friedman is considering several top skiers, possibly other Dartmouth graduates, to coach the freshmen. The selection will be made within a week.

Intersession Training

Lobitz will divide his time between Radcliffe and a race program at Waterville Valley. Cliffies may go to Waterville for an intersession training camp.

Intensive fall training of daily workouts began in September for the Harvard team. Five team members were skiing in South America this summer. Radcliffe practices have been limited to Sunday morning trips to Blue Hill.

Friedman is very optimistic about the team's prospects. Harvard could "become the best team in the East" in a few years he said, citing an influx of "fantastic" freshman skiers. Ginny Storrs, Cliffie captain, was equally enthusiastic about her team and its chances to capture the Women's Intercollegiate Ski Conference crown for the third consecutive year.
