Crimson Booters Try to Overcome Injuries to Azikiwe and Locksley

Saturday's soccer game at Cornell has left Harvard coach Bruce Munro with a touch of virus and two gaps in his lineup.

Munro, reached yesterday at home where he spent the day nursing a cold, was worried about his goalies and his halfbacks--particularly Abi Azikiwe, the Nigerian left half.

After a slow start this year, Azikiwe had come on quickly, turning in solid showings in the last several games, but the lanky senior has apparently worn his Crimson jersey for the last time.

He came back from Ithaca with a broken jaw, which should keep him out for the rest of the season. His loss leaves the already depthless halfbacks even weaker.

Munro has Mike Sicher to take over the right halfback slot, which he filled admirably for most of Saturday's contest, but that means switching captain Joe Gould over to left half. All of which leaves Munro with only one tested reserve at the middle of the field, senior Bill Schaeffer, who himself is just recently recovered from a bout with mononucleosis.

To add to his problems, Munro also is facing the nervous possibility of starting a third-string goalie against Dartmouth this Friday.

Sophomore Dick Locksley, who herst game five weeks ago and probably won't be ready for another week or so.

So the pressure is on junior Jay Breese, the third-string goalie. He was the top man on the jayvees last year, but his only varsity experience of any kidney ailment, dating from the Amstarted in the nets Saturday, was taken away in an ambulance in the third quarter with a back injury and is still on crutches, a doubtful performer this week. Pre-season starter, John Axten, has recovered slowly from a significance came Saturday at Ithaca. There, Breese made one beautiful save, blocking a hard shot with his body out in front of the goal, but misjudged a corner kick that went in over his head for the second Cornell tally.

The one happy thought for the Crimson booters is the Dartmouth team. The Indians have lost twice in the league so far, including a 6-2 shellacking at the hands of Brown this past Saturday. "Dartmouth is apparently having its troubles." Munro said last night, "but then, with our injuries, so are we."

In other Ivy action Yale continued its winning ways Saturday, but had to struggle to nip Columbia, 1-0. Harvard had an easy time a week ago in topping Columbia, 3-1, so the Bulldogs might not be all that strong. Princeton, which has played surprisingly well so far, shut out its neighborhood rival Rutgers, 2-0.
