Hironaka to Teach Math

Heisuke Hironaka has been appointed Professor of Mathematics at Harvard, as of July 1, 1968.

The Mathematics Department has not yet decided Hironaka's specific teaching duties here. Andrew M. Gleason, Chairman of the Department, said yesterday.

Hironaka, an algebraic geometrist, received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1960. He has taught at Brandeis University and done research at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J. Since 1949 he has been a professor at Columbia University.

He received an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship in 1962, and a Research Corporation Award in 1963.
