Yardlings Topple Lions in Debut

A third-quarter touchdown and extra point by Richie Szaro gave the Harvard freshman football team a 7-3 win over Columbia here yesterday in its season debut.

Harvard's coach Henry Lamar's defense. twice stopped the Lions inside the Crimson 5 yard line. In the first quarter Columbia settled for a field goal, and took a 3-0 lead into the locker room at half time.

In the vital third-period situation, Harvard defenders swarmed under the Light Blue fullback on a fourth-and-one rush from the 4.

Four plays later the Yardlings had to punt, but the Columbia return man rumbled when he was hit and Harvard took over at midfield. A sweep by half-back Herb Dreher and a burst up the middle by fullback Tom Miller brought the Crimson to the 3.

Szaro spun and twisted over the goal line from there and added the placement with his left-footed soccer-style kick.

Interceptions by Bob Kettle and Rick Manny shut off Columbia's late drives.
