The English department will be able to offer more courses in American literature next year because of the appointment of Warner B. Berthoff '47 as professor of English.
Berthoff, an authority on Melville and Emerson who has taught at Bryn Mawr since 1951, will teach the second half of English 70 plus two half-year conference groups and a graduate seminar.
The two conference groups will deal with "Symbolism in English and American Literature" fall term and "The American Story-Chronicle" spring term. Berthoff's fall term graduate seminar will be titled "Studies in American Realism."
"The appointment will make it possible for all of us to give more seminars and courses in a wider range," Kenneth S. Lynn '45, professor of English, said yesterday. "I think the shortage in this area has been acute."
Part of the shortage in American Literature courses this year is due to the absence of Joel M. Porte, assistant professor of English who is on leave for the year, and Albert J. Gelpi, assistant professor of English who will be away this spring. Both American literature specialists will return next year.
In English 70, Berthoff will be taking over for Lynn, who goes on sabbatical next year.
