Faculty-Supervised Loeb Directors May Qualify for Independent Study

By Donald E. Graham

One or two undergraduates "under close faculty supervision" may receive independent study credit for projects involving directing plays on the Loeb main stage next year.

A plan for such a project, involving reading and research as well as the production of the play, was brought before the Committee on Educational Policy yesterday by Daniel Seltzer, associate director of the Loeb.

No vote authorizing such a project was taken, but the committee agreed that it appeared to fall within the rubric of independent study. Seltzer was asked to return after a period of experimentation to discuss the success of the project.

In an interview last night, Seltzer stressed that not every main stage play was suitable for such a project. "Not every student director will want it, for one thing," he said. "The play in question would have to be a major work of literature, and otherwise suitable for such projects in an academic year.

He added that supervisors of such projects would be Faculty members holding teaching appointments. Like all independent study projects, such proposals would have to be approved by the Administrative Board or the Radcliffe Dean's Committee, and by the head tutor in the student's department.

Seltzer said that a student in Humanities 105, a small course whose members will study a play and then produce it on the main stage, would be permitted to apply for such an independent study if he were chosen to direct the play connected with the course.

Applications, he noted, would be considered only in the case of plays which had been approved for main stage production by the Harvard Dramatic Club Executive Committee and the Faculty Committee on Theatre.
