B.U., Cornell Teams Skate into ECAC's Semi-Finals

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Boston University and Cornell moved to the semi-finals of the Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey Tournament last night, with victories over northeastern and Boston College.

Cornell smashed B.C. 9-0 in Ithaca and B.U. outclassed the Huskies 4-1 at the Boston Arena.

B.U's solid defense was just too much Northeastern. Every offensive rally by the Northeastern stalwarts was frustrated by the hard-rock B.U. defense. They continually forced Northeastern's forwards wide and into the corners. The shots Northeastern was able to manage were from a long distance out and relatively easy for goalie Jack Ferreira to handle.

B.U. opened the scoring at 5:48 of the first period, enjoying a one man advantage on an early penalty. Pete MacLachlan notched the goal on a blistering slap shot as he waded in slightly from the left point.

In the first period Northeastern played sloppily and had trouble clearing the puck out of their defensive zone. They were continually harassed by the quicker and more aggressive B.U. forwards. The Huskies shook off the doldrums in the second and third periods and settled down to play fine and fast hockey.

In other Tournament games, Clarkson topped Colgate 5-2 and Brown whipped St. Lawrence 4-2, largely on the strength of a stand out performence by Brown all-American Bob Gaudreau. He scored a goal and added two assists.

Brown maintained a wide territorial advantage over the Larries which was reflected in Brown's 39 shots as compared to St. Lawrence's 25.

Brown will meet Cornell Friday night and Clarkson will face B.U. at the Boston Arena.

Professional Basketball

The Philadelphia 76er's overtook the Boston Celtics for first place in the Eastern division of the National Basketball Association by defeating the St. Louis Hawks 112-106. The 76er's now lead the Celtics by one-half game.

The Celtics were idle last night as the 76er's forged ahead. The Boston team has five remaining games and the 76er's have six.

Casey Stengel

Casey Stengel has been named to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The voluble old baseball great was chosen by a unanimous vote of the 11-man baseball veterans nominating committee last night.

Stengel managed the New York Yankees in their glory days of the '50's when they won eight pennants and six World Series.
