Wrestlers to Mash Yale; Chace Seeks Ninth Win

The pros couldn't have staged it better if they'd fixed it. The Harvard wrestling team winds up one of its best seasons in the last decade at 3:30 p.m. in the IAB, the opponent is Yale, and we're gonna kill 'em. Who could ask for anything more?

The meet will be the last for the man who suddenly turned into one of the best heavyweights in the East this year: Tack Chace. The towering senior has beaten all eight of his adversaries, and though Yale captain Mike Lonergan won't be a pushover, Chace should make him number nine.

The Yale meet will also be the last of captain Tom Gilmore. Gilmore has led the Crimson to a 6-3 season thus far, with a 4-1 Ivy League mark. If the Elis are beaten, Harvard will finish the year with its best record ever in the Ivy League.

There is still a faint glimmer of hope that Harvard might land in a three-way tie for the league title, if Princeton pulls off a miracle and somehow manages to beat Cornell. The prospect should be discussed in hushed tones only; if it occurs, tour wrestling since Jacob took on the angel.

It's hard to find a good word to say about Yale. The Elis have not won a match all year, and in their last two outings, have scored a total of only eight points. One comparative score should suffice: Yale lost to Brown 28-8, and Harvard beat Brown 31-3. Convinced?

Besides Lonergan, the Elis' best wrestlers are Tip Himes at 177 and Fred Southwick at 160. Ken Haltenhoff, who finished fourth in the Nationals last year as a sophomore, quit the team earlier in the season.

Crimson coach Bob Pickett will start sophomore Andy Kopecki at 123, moving Howie Henjyoji to 130 in place of Bing Sung. Gilmore will start at 137, Phil Emmi or Howie Durfee at 145, Ed Franquemont at 152, Paul Padlak at 160, Dave Worcester at 167, Jep Grant at 177, Bill Malugen at 191, and Chace at heavy weight. Sung, Durfee, and Worcester are all seniors.
