George W. Goethals '43, lecturer on Social Relations, has been named permanent associate chairman of the Social Relations Department, David C. McClelland, department chairman, announced yesterday.
McClelland said that the appointment represented recognition of Soc Rel's "real need for a high-level administration officer."
Like most other departments, Soc Rel has a rotating chairmanship, with a new man occupying the position every few years. Goethals said yesterday that he sees his new post as "an opportunity to establish continuity in the department on mattes of personnel and educational policy."
McClelland pointed out that the institution of an executive chairmanship should alleviate a problem he noted in the department last fall. At that time, he administrative responsibilities and lack cooperation of certain faculty members often forced him to shortchange students.
Goethals' appointment will mean that graduate teaching will get a fair shake." McClelland said. He explained pressures for research and promotion often force faculty members to neglect undergraduates.
Goethals emphasized yesterday that this new post will not detract from his primary concerns: education, research, and students. He will continue to teach his popular undergraduate course in adolescence, Soc Rel 152. He also plans to his duties as assistant dean of the College, working with Dean Monro on problems of the sophomore year and the new House assignment system.
