Harvard Matmen Beaten in Semis

A pair of heartbreaking losses in the semifinals denied Ed Franquemont and Paul Padlak a chance to pick up some individual honors in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Pittsburgh.

While most of the other Harvard wrestling were eliminated in the first round, Padlak and Franquemont both defeated their first two opponents to gain the semis. Padlak at 160 and Franquemont at 152.

Padlak had a 3-1 lead over Cornell's Jeff Stevens in the last period of their semifinal match when Stevens got a sudden reversal and pinned the Crimson, asmore. Padlak, in pain from a broken suffered in one of his earlier bouts, was pinned again in the consolation hitch by Mitchell of Princeton.

Franquemont lost in the semis to Clair Riley of Pitt in overtime. The score in overtime period was 5-1, as Franquemont never seemed to get his attack going. He then dropped a 3-2 decision to Temple's Al Lilly in the consolations.

Howie Henjyoji at 123 and Howie Durfee at 137 also won their first round matches, but each lost the next bout and was eliminated.
