Epiphanies: The Photographer as Artist

By Richard T. Fisher

The photographer does not strange his subject to conform to his interpretive feelings; instead he constantly observes and analyzes--trying to separate the essence of the subject from what exists physically before him. More specifically, he adjusts the camera angle to exclude distractions or include balancing space; selects a range of focus which best subordinates background to the subject; and controls exposure and lighting to balance highlights with shadows or to discard unnecessary texture as in this silhouette.
