As Harvard's wrestlers were in the process of eradicating Brown 31 to 3 on saturday, you got the feeling that the Bruins would have liked nothing better than to pack up and go home. And lo! That's just what they did, without even bothering to field a heavyweight against the Crimson's Tack Chace.
Of course, Brown heavyweight and Captain Ed McEntee was on crutches with a knee injury, but the fact that the Crimson had won eight straight decisions over hapless Bruin wrestlers hardly made Brown Coach Bob Litchard reluctant to cut his losses and retreat.
Bing Sung, at 130 for Harvard, started the rout by edging Dick Whipple 4 to 3 in riding time, after Brown collected its only win of the afternoon when Steve Gluckman downed Howie Henjyoji 7 to 1 at 123.
Harvard captain Tom Gilmore beat Bill Achilles 4 to 2 at 137, and Phil Emmi, replacing Howie Durfee at 145 for the Crimson, bothered John Alexander with his down-on-one-knee style and topped the Brown wrestler 3 to 2.
Harvard's Ed Franquemont rode Robbie to exhaustion at 152 and won 7 to 0, and Paul Padlak was just as hard on the Bruins' Bob Bundy, drubbing him 12 to at 160.
Chris Wickens defeated Steve Zwarg Brown 8 to 4 at 167, and Harvard's Jeff Grant reversed Don Kmieczak in the last 30 seconds to win 6 to 5 at 177. Bill Malugen won his first Harvard varsity match by default against Bob Maddox at 191. Malugen, after a second-period escape, drove for Maddox's leg and the two men rolled off the mat, Maddox struck his elbow on the hardwood of the basketball floor and was unable to continue.
The win lifts Harvard's record to 6-3 with a 4-1 Ivy League record.
