Quintet Tops Amherst, Royer, Kanuth Tally 16

AMHERST, Dec. 15--The Harvard basketball team, sparked by six double figure performances, whomped Amherst last night, 94-62 at the latter's frigid field house.

Forwards Barth Royer, Bob Kanuth, Chris Gallagher, and Dan Martell and guards Jeff Grate and Bob Beller all poured in more than ten points each in an amazing display of the Crimson's depth.

Royer, snapping back from his disappointing performance in Tuesday's Boston College game, notched sixteen points as did Kanuth. Grate added 15 and Beller and Martell 12 each.

The team played without captain Gene Dressler, who suffered a bone chip of the middle finger of his right hand in the closing seconds of the B.C. game. Harvard stormed to a 23 point lead at half time, 50-27, after overcoming early ball-handling problems. In the second half, coach Floyd Wilson experimented with several different player combinations and managed to shuffle everyone except Dressler into the action by the final whistle.

Slow Start

For the first nine minutes of the game, a combination of Crimson mistakes and the phenomenal driving ability of the Lord Jeffs' smooth sophomore forward Wally Bazenas kept the score respectable.

Then, with the score 18-16 in Harvard's favor, Grate slammed home a jumper from the top of the foul circle; Royer and Beller tallied layups off Kanuth's assists; Grate scored again on a flying drive, and all of a sudden the Crimson was ten points ahead and rolling.

Harvard Explosion

About three minutes later, Royer and Beller unleashed for 16 points, while the Amherst team could muster only three. After this explosion, Harvard held an insurmountable 46-25 margin. Two goals for the Crimson, and one for Amherst closed the half at 50-27.

The Crimson squad out-scored Amherst by nine points in the second half, and pulled away to a whalloping 32 point victory margin.

Harvard was 39 for 74 from the floor, with Royer connecting 7 times out of 11, and Grate ending the night 7 for 9. Amherst shooters swished 20 out of 47, with Bob Kraus' 13 point evening marshaling the losing efforts.
