Harvard Still On Track To Reach Fossil Fuel-Neutral Status by 2026, Sustainability Report Finds
Harvard opened its varsity swimming season with an easy 61-34 win over Spring-field yesterday.
The Crimson swept five of eleven events, and took eight firsts in all. Three Harvard swimmers were double winners.
All four individual freestyle events were won by Harvard. Bill Shrout took the 60 yard and 100 yard events, and Pete Adams completed the sweep with victories in the 200 yard and 500 yard races.
Bob Corris was the Crimson's third double winner, taking first in both the 160 yard individual medley and the 200 yard breaststroke.
The diving event also ended in a Harvard sweep. Sophomore Bill Murphy took first, with Pete Alter close behind in second.
Olympian Neville Hayes added Harvard's last win with his usual victory in the 200 yard butterfly.
With the meet already safely won, Harvard eased up and lost both relays, missing a win in the 400 yard freestyle relay by an inch.
The team's strong showing adds encouragement to hope for an upset over defending league champion Army on Saturday.
The Yardling swimmers eked out a 48-47 win in the final relay.
