Fire at Holyoke Scars Basement

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Fire broke out at Holyoke Center last night in a basement storage room of the Cambridge Trust Company.

A routine company of three engines, two hook-and-ladders, and a rescue truck arrived at about 8:30 as 100 looked on.

Trash Burns

Firemen pulled hoses across the Holyoke Center plaza, into the bank building and downstairs to extinguish the burning refuse. They brought the fire under control almost immediately.

Damage was limited to some cardboard cartons and other office trash that would eventually have been destroyed anyhow.

Deputy Chief O'Donnell of the Fire Department said that the fire was probably started by a discarded cigarette.
