Steve Schoonover bettered his own University pole vault record and his sophomore classmate Trey Burns won the 500 and the 1000 as the Harvard trackmen romped over Boston College 78-31 in Briggs Cage Saturday. It was the third straight win for the Crimson.
Schoonover cleared 14 ft 2 in., topping his previous best of 14 ft. against Boston University December 15. Burns took the 500 in 1:14.7 and posted a 2:18.1 clocking to win the 1000.
Harvard won everything but the two weight events and the 40-yard dash. In the dash, the Eagles' Terry Cochrane upset defending Heptagonal champion Wayne Andersen in the slow time of 0:04.7.
But that was Harvard's only disappointment. Captain Tony Lynch won the 40 yard high hurdles in tied Andersen for second in the dash, and ran the first leg for the victorious two mile relay team. Jim Baker took the mile in 4:16 and watched from the sidelines as fellow sophomore Joe Ryan led a Harvard sweep of the two-mile with a 9:58.8 clocking.
Charles Njoku cleared 5 ft., 4 in. to take first place in the high jump. Harvey Thomas captured the broad jump with a 22 ft. leap.
