HUC Will Poll Lamont's Inhabitants On Reactions to Invasion by Cliffies

Daniel C. Goldfarb Jr. '66, chairman of the HUC, said yesterday that students in Lamont will be polled sometime this week to learn if they think Cliffies should be allowed in the library.

He said there will probably be two polls, one in the afternoon and one in the evening. As many students as possible will be questioned. The HUC will turn the results of the poll over to the officers of the library.

Last Wednesday, Goldfarb discussed the HUC opposition to letting girls into Lamont with Merie Fainsod, chairman of the Library Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Douglas W. Bryant, University Librarian; and Theodore G. Alevizos, head librarian at Lamont.

Goldfarb was assured that the plan to admit girls to Lamont had not yet reached the proposal stage and was merely under discussion.

No Decision Yet

Bryant said yesterday that "the whole purpose of Lamont Library is to serve the student body. There is no other purpose." He added that no decision would be taken before the opinions of everyone concerned are examined. The library officers plan to "continue discussions very thoughtfully," Bryant explained.

He said that if an opinion poll were taken to see where Cliffies stand on the issue of admission to Lamont, library officials "would be interested." Library officers are also concerned with the views of women graduate students, he said.

The suggestion to admit girls to Lamont, Bryant reiterated yesterday, has not passed the stage of informal discussion and investigation by the library staff.

Bryant said that various student groups have proposed admitting girls to Lamont ever since the library was built. The library staff is considering the idea now because of the move of Rad Libe from the Radcliffe Yard to the Quad.
