The Class of 1940 has dedicated its 25th Anniversary Report to classmate John F. Kennedy. The frontispiece of the 1500-page volume, published last week, is inscribed "To our Classmate ... with pride and a deep sense of loss."
Peter E. Pratt '40, reunion chairman and class secretary, said yesterday the Class had sought a "dignified way to honor the President ever since we began planning our 25th reunion." No previous Harvard class report has been dedicated to an individual, Pratt noted.
Pratt wrote in the foreword to the report "that it seems only appropriate to honor John F. Kennedy, whose brilliant career was cut short so tragically. The President's death was an unbelievable shock to all of us, as reflected in his classmates' many references to him in this report."
The report is a collection of autobiographies and photographs of the 800 members of the Class of 1940. Each Harvard alumnus, before his 25th reunion, is asked to write an evaluation of "his accomplishments since entering the fraternity of educated men."
The President's class has also established a John F. Kennedy memorial scholarship fund to provide an undetermined number of Harvard undergraduate scholarships. Members of the Kennedy family will decide on what basis the scholarships will be awarded.
