Varsity Netmen Overwhelm Cornell and Army Squads

With the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis League Championship in sight, the Harvard tennis team ran through Cornell and Army this weekend to extend its ague record to 7-0 and its regular season mark to 10-0.

Cornell crept into Cambridge Friday, stopping to better last year's 8-1 loss to Harvard. This time they got sapped, 9-0.

In the number one match, Chum Steele continued his streak of sparkling play of pounding John Gallinato, 6-0, 3-6. Last near Gallinato defeated Crimson star Frank Ripley.

Dave Benjamin had a little more trouble of number two, but edged persistent Craig Flager, 6-4, 9-7. Harvard swept the rest of the matches with relative ease: Live Kileff (three) blitzed Mark Green, 6-1, 6-2: Captain Dean Peckham (four) momentarily lost concentration against Bill Swift, and then bashed him in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1; merciless Richie Friedman (five) wiped Joe Friedman, 6-2, 6-1: Terry Robinson (six) downed John Nerenberg, 7-5, 6-3.

For a little excitement, Coach Jack Barnaby tried a few variations in the doubles. Sophomores Dick Appleby and Brian Davis downed Gallinato and Swift by the baffling score of 0-6, 6-0, 7-5.

The Crimson netmen took five of six singles matches Saturday to cut down a top-heavy Army team, 6-2.

Remembering last year's loss to Army's highly rated Wait Ovehrlein, Steele got revenge on the scrappy Cadet, 3-6, 7-5. Oehrlein was runner-up in the Eastern collegiate tournament last June.
