Harvard's baseball team, still fighting for survival in the Eastern intercollegiate League, will host a weak Dartmouth squad is Splinter Stadium at 3 p.m. today.
The Indians have a dismal 1-7-1 record this season; in the EIBL, they are 1-2, with a victory over Penn and losses to columbia and Cornell.
Dartmouth's outstanding player is lefthanded pitcher Jim Shaw, and if he is on the mound today Harvard will not be able to coast to a victory. A Control pitcher with a good curve, Shaw has an earned run average to 1.47. Against penn he threw only 110 pitches and limited the Quakers to six hits.
With a team batting average of 200 the Indian lineup does not throw rival pitchers into paroxysms of terror. But Dartmouth does have three usually re-unable batters: Second baseman Mickey Beard, who has a mark of 348; out fielder Ken McGruther and cather Dick Horton, both of whom are hitting 223.
The Crimson should probably have little trouble handling the Indians, particularly if ace righthander John Scott is on the hill. Harvard currently has a 4.7 overall record, with a 2.2 EIBL mark.
Every team in the league has lost at least game, so the Crimson is still in contention. But one more loss would kill even faint hopes.
