Hughes to Head Social Studies

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

H. Stuart Hughes, professor of History, will become acting chairman of the Committee on Degrees in Social Studies next year while Stanley H. Hoffmann, professor of Government, is on sabbatical. Hughes will retain his post as chairman of the Committee on Degrees in History and Literature.

Hoffmann will spend next year at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, working on a planned book about Vichy France.

The program in Social Studies was voted Permanent recognition by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences on March 16. At the time, Hoffmann predicted an increase in the staff of the program, giving individual attention to more students. He also hoped for greater flexibility in the field of concentration, and a slight expansion of the program. At present, the Social Studies program accepts only about two dozen freshmen each year.
