Stickmen Beat Brown Squad, 8-7

After jumping to a 2-goal lead in the first quarter, the Crimson lacrosse team had to fight hard to withstand a strong, fourth-quarter Brown attack before winning 8-7 in the final 30 seconds of play.

The favored Bruins, who entertain Ivy crown hopes, were never ahead. At 6:52 in the final quarter they caught up with the Crimson, tying the score at 6-6 as a Brown attackman coming down the middle in the clear took a pass from the right side and scored.

Three minutes later, Crimson attackman Ted Leary took a pass, ran half the length of the field by himself, and scored on a clean shot from the left side of the crease.

With the Crimson ahead 7-6, the ball moved from one end of the field to the other as both teams moved the ball fast and checking was hard.

With only 46 seconds remaining in the game, Bruin Gneiser, alone on the left, evened the score at 7-7. Then, Crimson midfielder Denis Byrne got the ball after the face off, raced down the field with his stick in the air, and got off a hard shot from about fifteen feet out which landed in the right corner of the net. The winning goal came 30 seconds before the final gun.

Although the Crimson led 5-3 at the end of the first half, the Bruins played a sharper game in the first two periods. Crimson passes and shots were not as precise and the Crimson did not have the Bruin teamwork on attack.

The Crimson's main problem this year has been putting together a smoothly-functioning attack. On several occasions today the Crimson attack looked as though it is beginning to work together. At 13:41 in the first quarter midfielder Jan Bollinger scored the Crimson's third goal after the ball had been worked in quickly by the attack and first midfield lines. Again, early in the second period, the Crimson passed the ball in quickly setting up plays several times but failed to score.

Harvard's next league contest is Saturday at Cornell.
