Crimson Nine Hosts B.U. In Opening GBL Contest

Harvard will begin defense of its Greater Boston League baseball title tomorrow, it's too early to order champagne for the victory party.

Boston University moves into Splinter Stadium at 3 p.m. tomorrow for the GBL opener, and the Crimson will be the underdog. B.U. carries a 2-1-1 record into the game, including a 3-1 victory over Navy. Harvard lost 4-0 to Navy last week.

The Terriers have also beaten George Washington, and were barely outlasted by the University of Connecticut, losing 1-0 in 13 innings. Sophomore shortstop Wally Birchler leads the team with a .333 average, and he is backed up by junior Bob Scanlon at .300. Starting on the mound tomorrow will be Ron Garilimon, who has a 1-1 record in three appearances, In 19 innings, he has walked 3, fanned twelve, and compiled an impressive 1.42 earned run average.

The Crimson's weak hitting is complemented by some equally unimpressive pitching performances. Larry Melfa, rained out yesterday against Springfield, Kent Mitchell, or John Scott may go against B.U. Scott's record of 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA is the only solid, performance on the roster.

Harvard's only .300 hitter is third-baseman Jim Tobin. Everyone else is below .250, and altogether the batting order has managed to produce only 14 runs in six games. The hitting will probably improve as the season goes on, but last year's undefeated GBL showing looks unapproachable.
