Neuberger Asks Law On Cigarette Labeling

Senator Maurine Neuberger (D-Ore.) last night charged the United States government with committing a "sin of omission" in its reluctance to take action warning the public of the hazards of cigarette smoking.

Speaking to a small audience in the Holmes Hall Living Room, she urged passage of a bill requiring health warnings to be put on cigarette packaging and advertising.

Congress should move to implement the conclusions reached in the 1964 Surgeon General's Report, the Senator believes. But, "we don't want a scare approach," she added. Instead, she has proposed a bill that would require cigarettes packages to carry "hazardous to health" warnings and give tar and nicotine contents. The bill would also force every cigarette advertisement to contain a "hazardous to health" warning.
