Harvard's fencing team rolled over a weakened Cornell squad 17-10 Saturday, for their first Ivy League victory of the season.
The Big Red came to Cambridge minus All-American foil expert Ron Schwartz who was bed-ridden with influenza.
Sparked by shut-out wins by Captain Jon Kolb in the sabre, and Rick Kalombotovitch in the epee, the Crimson emerged victorious in all three weapons.
Kolb's win in the sabre was followed by a 2-1 victory by Harvard's Bob Damus. Paul Profeta, back in the sabre line-up after a try at epee last week, took only one of his three bouts in the third position, to give Harvard a 6-3 victory.
In epee, the Crimson rebounded from a 1-8 loss to Princeton last week to top Cornell 6-3. Kolombatovich won all three of his bouts by the slim margin of five touches to four. Paul Mundie and Hugh Winig scored 2-1, and 1-2 respectively.
A closer battle in the foil division resulted in a 5-4 victory for the Crimson, as both Dave Dooley and Tom Musliner took two out of their three bouts. The win advances the fencers' over-all record to 11-4, and boosts their Ivy League record to 1-3.
Harvard meets Yale next weekend in the last dual meet of the season, and the prospects look good for a Crimson victory. Yale was overpowered by Cornell last weekend, 20-7.
