Bob Hetherington Takes Harvard Squash Crown

Bob Hetherington of the Divinity School, a semifinalist in last month's national squash championships, raced past the varsity's Terry Robinson to win the University squash tournament Monday. The scores were 15-3, 15-7, 15-12.

Hetherington, Yale captain two years ago, pulled away on perfect corner shots and powerful cross-court drives. Robinson, like Hetherington a specialist in touch shots, was never able to set up his game against Hetherington's forcing play.

The two players, both left-handed, traded complicated three-wall "boast" shots frequently but Hetherington's game was just too sharp for Robinson, the varsity's second-ranked player this year. Number one player Romer Holleran had defaulted in an earlier round.

It was Hetherington's second appearance in the finals in his two years at the Divinity School. Last year he lost in five games to Vic Niederhoffer, then Harvard captain, Niederhoffer, third-ranked among U.S. amateur players, beat him again in the national championships this year.

The players received their trophies from Hugh K. Foster '50, one of the three brothers who were squash captains and number one players at Harvard and who later donated the Foster Trophy.
