Harvard's track team did more than merely overwhelm five Greater Boston teams this weekend. They unveiled several new stars to support the old cast while scoring a record 93 points to 45 for runnerup Northeastern in the Sixth annual Greater Boston College Track and Field Meet.
John Dockery, John Parker, Mike Hauck, and Tony Lynch ran a 3:24.5 mile relay to lower the Briggs Cage record by 1.7 seconds. The mark also took a full ten seconds off the old GBI mark, and was made without any real competition. Second place B.C. finished in 3:30.7.
Wayne Anderson won both the trials and the finals in the 40-yard dash in 4.6, a tenth off the University mark of 4.5. Aggrey Awori was among the beaten in the finals, which Anderson won by almost two full steps.
Walt Hewlett broke his own Briggs Cage record of 9:22.8 in the two-mile with a 9:21.0. Jim Smith spirnted from fifteen yards back in the last lap of the two mile race, but barely missed catching second place finisher George Starkus of B.U. at the tape.
Smith ran the two-mile instead of the mile because of a sore knee. Coach Bill McCurdy felt that the slower pace of the two mile would offer less chance of aggravating the injury with the heptagonals only two weeks away.
Aggrey Awori, voted outstanding performer of the meet by the coaches, won both the high and low hurdles and took thirds in the broad jump and dash.
Keith Chiappa finished third in both the 600 and 1000, obviously still suffering from his sore foot.
Other team scores were B.C. 36, B.U. 25, and M.I.T. 9. Tufts never should have bothered. They didn't score a point.
The freshmen won in a breeze: Harvard 100 1/2; Northeastern 49 1/2; B.C. 22; B.U. 14; M.L.T. 6; Tufts 5. Harvard Freshman captain Jim Baker won both the mile in 4:22.7 and the two-mile in 9:33.4.
