8 Takeaways From Harvard’s Task Force Reports
A plagued Harvard squash team escaped from Army Saturday with a 6-3 victory and a major stumbling block out of the way.
With six of the nine Crimson starters hit by sickness or injuries, Harvard found itself hard pressed by a hustling Army team. Crimson captain Dinny Adams (number one), Todd Wilkinson (four), and Matt Hall (nine) were all suffering from a bug, but still managed to win.
Hall, the day's hero, feebly dropped his first two games before rallying, 6-15, 6-15, 15-9, 17-14, 18-14. Wilkinson dropped the first games of his Varsity career but won the match, 15-10, 16-17, 15-11, 9-15, 15-11.
Injured Lose
Two injured Harvard players were not as fortunate. Craig Stapleton (six), out last week because of a sprained ankle, bowed to Army's Jim Allen, 3 to 1. Dave Benjamin (eight), still bothered by a back pull, battled to a 12-9 lead in the fifth game than them succumbed, 18 to 14.
Harvard's third loss was at number seven, where Peter Brooks burned out against Cadet Larry Cage, 8-15, 18-15, 9-15, 15-10, 15-7.
As expected, the Crimson cleaned up in the top positions. Adams downed Bob Loftin, Army's number one man, 3 to 1. The Harvard sophomores, Jose Gonzalez and Rick Sterne, have yet to lose a game this season. At Army, Gonzalez blitzed Bob Nichols in the number two match, 15-6, 15-10, 15-6; Sterne won just as handily at number three, 17-15, 15-7, 15-6.
Steve Simpson (five), suffering from a pulled back, dropped a shaky first game to Army's Bob Mendell before settling down, 17-18, 15-9, 15-7, 17-16.
