Fake 'Harvard Council' Demands Death of LBJ

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

WAKEFIELD. Nov.4--Ten mimeographed pamphlets calling for the assassination of President Johnson and signed by the "Harvard Council for Restoring U.S. Democracy" were found on a street here today.

Dean Watson said tonight that the group was "absolutely phony." Harvard will institute legal action against its authors as soon as they are apprehended, he said.

The pamphlets were discovered early today by a Wakefield newsboy. They bore the heading "Why Kill LBJ?" and read "Because he is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans in Vietnam, forced to fight for their own lives in a futile war in which they do not believe. SOMEONE MUST KILL LBJ if democracy is to be restored in the U.S." The name of the organization was at the bottom.

The boy brought the pamphlets home and his mother contacted Wakefield police, who called the FBI and the Secret Service.

A custodian at Wakefield's St. John's Church discovered another pamphlet in the church parking lot later in the morning. This one read "Thousands of Americans are being killed while LBJ vacations." There was no mention of the Harvard organization but it was written by the same hand and mimeographed on the same machine as the other pamphlets.

The parking lot is next to the local train station and is used by commuters. Secret Service agents were reported to be checking all the cars in the lot for more pamphlets this afternoon.

Because the lot is a half mile from the spot where the first pamphlets were found, there was speculation that they fell from an automobile bound for the station.

At Harvard, spokesmen for Students for a Democratic Society and the May Second Movement said they had never heard of the "Harvard Council."
