H. Stuart Hughes, professor of History, will take a sabbatical leave next year to finish a new book and to teach at the University of Paris. He will live in Paris the entire year and give a course at the University's Nanterre branch in the spring term.
Hughes has been appointed Bacon Exchange Professor under a program that subsidizes the exchange of Harvard and French university professors. He has not yet determined the subject of his lectures.
His undergraduate courses, History 134b, "European intellectual history in the twentieth century," History 152b. "History of Italy since 1860," and Humanities 116. "Ideology in contemporary European nation," will not be given next year.
Hughes will relinquish his positions as chairman of the History and Literature program, and acting chairman of the Social Studies program.
