York University Appoints Conway

John J. Conway, former Master of Leverett House, has been named the first master of Founders College at newly created York University in Toronto, Canada.

Conway, a Canadian citizen, came to Harvard in 1949 to study for his doctorate in history of the British Commonwealth. He became an instructor in 1951 and in 1952 was named the University's first Allston Burr senior tutor, serving at Eliot House.

He planned to return to Canada at the end of his five-year term, but was offered the opportunity to take over at Leverett House.

During his five years as Master, Conway pressed for the construction of Leverett Towers.

He resigned suddenly in the fall of 1962 to help plan the new university. It occupies a 600 acre tract on the outskirts of Toronto and will admit its first students in August.
