Soccer Team Tops Penn; Njoku Scores Two Goals

Charlie Njoku's second goal halfway through the fourth quarter gave the Harvard soccer team a 3-2 comeback victory at Penn Saturday. The win knocked the Quakers out of the Ivy League race and left the Crimson in good striking position of league-leading Brown.

Njoku's first goal, a turnaround shot amid a swarm of Penn backs, came in the second quarter and gave Harvard a 1-0 halftime lead.

With the wind at its back in the third quarter, Penn took the lead on two goals scored a a minute apart by left wing Roger Lorberbaum. Starting goalie Norris Childs was then replaced by Richie Hammond, who shut Penn out the rest of the game.

Harvard, favored by the wind in the fourth quarter, rallied from behind for the first time this year.

With six minutes gone in the final period, inside Hugh Polk rocketed in the tying goal. Polk's shot was set up by sharp passing between Captain Bill Kerstetter and right winger Dudley Blodget.

Seven minutes later, Njoku, surrounded by the Penn backfield, rifled in the winning goal from a seemingly impossible angle.

Harvard, which now boasts a 3-1 record in Ivy play, remains tied for second place with Yale. The Eli booters edged Dartmouth, 1-0, over the weekend.

In other action, Brown, which opened the year with an identical 3-2 victory over Penn, boosted its record to 4-0 with a 1-0 win at Princeton.
